“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9
In this eighth chapter of 2 Corinthians, in the midst of a chapter on giving, Paul, by inspiration of the Holy Ghost, reminds us that the greatest gift ever given is the Lord Jesus Christ.
In fact, what better example could be made than to speak of the gift of our Savior when speaking to others about giving for the cause of Christ. Our Savior, as the verse states, though He was rich, yet for our sakes became poor. Our all-wise Creator left the majesty and riches of heaven and became a man without ceasing to be God. He was born in a lowly manger. The " ...Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)
It was through His poverty that we might be rich. This babe that was born of the virgin Mary-- lived and died on a Roman cross for you and for me because of our sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 states, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." He shed His blood that you and I could be reconciled to Him. The Bible tells us further that He was buried and He rose from the grave in victory (Mark 16:6; Romans 4:25). Because we are sinners, we need a Savior--and Jesus Christ is our Savior!
How can one receive the riches spoken of in this verse? By receiving the gift of God, which is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23).
The word 'might' in the text indicates that not everyone will receive the gift of God. The ultimate question is "What think ye of Christ?" Some will repent of their sin and receive Him as Savior, while others will choose not to receive the gift of God. What will you do with Jesus Christ this Christmas season?
I pray that if you are a Christian, you will praise Him for becoming poor that you might be rich. I pray that if you do not know Him as your Savior, you would receive Him right now. The Bible says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:9-13)
The greatest gift that has ever been given is Jesus Christ! The greatest gift you could ever receive, likewise, is Jesus Christ!
